Adventures in Moose Land 2006

Adventures in Moose Land, May, 2006

The weather was cool and rainy but we still set out for the far northern reaches of New Hampshire. The promise of a clearing sky in the afternoon gave us hope. On our anniversary, Bill and I love to travel up to New Hampshire's "Moose Alley" in the beautiful Pittsburg area. Canoeing and hiking was the agenda for the day.

moose 1

Moose Alley - We always drive all the way north to the Canadian border, searching the roadsides. This first moose was a big bull just south of the 3rd Connecticut Lake.

gray jay

Gray jay - We started out canoeing but soon turned back when the rain showed no sign of stopping soon. Just as we were leaving, a pair gray jays (Canada jay), the large fluffy gray birds of the cool northern forest, landed right beside us.

whitetail deer

Whitetail buck - It was too wet to canoe so a short hike sounded good. Such an unusual thing happened. We saw a deer on the road, took a couple of pictures before it disappeared.

whitetail deer & Jeanne

Jeanne and the deer - Sloshing through the rain, we made our way to the river. Suddenly, a foot or two behind me appeared the deer! He followed us right down to the water's edge. This small deer seemed to be healthy and very tame. He stayed so close, it was even hard to photograph! He continued to follow me like a puppy dog, right back to our car.

moose 2

Moose 2 - Time to check out another pond. We were sitting in the car, waiting for the rain to end so we could go canoeing when this fella appeared seemingly out of thin air. In no time flat, he swam across the pond, disappearing into the vast woods beyond.
